The Need
A 2007 study by the National Center of Education Statistics found that 70% of 4th grade ELLs and 71% of 8th grade ELLs scored below-basic on a reading ability test (NCES). Learning a new language can be quite difficult, especially if it is the language one has to use every day to communicate. Immigrants are faced with this dilemma, and without any support from English speakers, they will not be able to learn English as quickly as they would like. Besides interaction with English speakers, reading can help English Language Learners (ELL) develop a wider vocabulary and practice their critical thinking.
ELL students are usually forced to read for understanding rather than for pleasure. As they struggle with literacy and language, reading becomes a burden. As a result, not only will they fail to notice the information but also the joy in reading. The "read to understand" approach used in many schools holds students, especially ESL students, back from developing a love of reading.
Our program encourages students to develop a love of reading, thus fostering this love and encouraging imagination and success in the future.
